Want to know how to tape trigeminal neuralgia, also known as facial pain? Keep on reading on this page and you will learn how to do it all yourself!
Trigeminal neuralgia is a facial pain caused by irritation of the three branches of the facial nerve. It starts above the ear and runs to the forehead, upper jaw, and lower jaw. It is characterised by a sudden, sharp stabbing pain. It often occurs on one side, running along the three branches to the chin, cheek or nose, and forehead. It can also occur as a toothache. The pain attacks often last only a few seconds and can be repeated at intervals of a few minutes. In between, there are intervals of a few days when the pain is completely gone. Trigeminal neuralgia should always be examined by a neurologist. The described tape is only an additional way to relieve the irritated nerve.
Tips for a good taping application:
- Is the cause of the complaint or pain clear?
- Check if there any contraindications for not taping.
- Before you start taping, carefully read the instructions.
- Choose a colour of tape, any colour that fits your mood!
- Round of all the edges to prevent peeling.
- Do not stretch the tape at the beginning and the end.
- Rub the tape well for adhesion. Heat activates the adhesive layer.
- Showering or swimming is possible, pat the tape dry after it gets wet. Do not rub it hard.
- It is easier to remove the tape with body or massage oil.

Application
Step 1:
Step 2:
Step 3:
- Place the base of the first tape without stretching as close as possible to the ear or jaw joint.
- Guide the tape with a slight stretch in the direction of the forehead.
- Place the base of the second tape, without stretching, slightly offset from the base of the first tape. Guide the tape with minimal tension along the jaw to the tip of the chin.
- Place the base of the third tape in the centre, without stretching, on the previously applied base and guide the tape with a slight stretch towards the nostril.
- Finally, gently rub the tapes together.
Attention: since trigeminal neuralgia is a hypersensitivity of the nerve, you need to remove the tape very carefully. If the tape is not removed carefully, it can irritate the nerve again and cause pain.
